The really hard times I've had were when it was windblown, hardpacked snow, and my 23's were breaking through it.. but not straight down... and only some of the time. You can do sets of 20 push ups even if you haven't done them in a while (in my case three months, oops), you get tired, you lock out your arms and rest, then do another.
